SMIRCICH BUTTON MASHER

Developed by Jim Smircich, the Smircich Button Masher is a plier with a stainless pad on each jaw set parallel to each other at 1/8". One pad extends further than the other does. To shape a button you first melt a round ball of glass at the end of a glass rod. Next, set the end of the molten glass ball onto a graphite pad, with the glass rod pointing skyward, to flatten the end of the glass ball. Reheat the glass and use the mashers to shape the button face to a gentle dome shape. The longer pliers pad shapes the face of the button while the shorter pad rests against the glass rod and shapes the back of the button. The glass rod can later become the button's loop.

UNCLE AL ROD GRABBER

Designed by Al Janelle, the Uncle Al Rod Grabber is a modified hemostat about 9" long. It holds a glass  rod similarly to the Murrini Hemostats, but the glass rod's length lines up to the center line of the hemostats. Works great for holding that last two inches of a rod. It can be seen used in Al's video series  listed below.

BLOW HOSE ASSEMBLY

Blow Hose assemblies are used to blow air into a glass tube, by mouth, while rotating the tube either by hand or lathe and applying heat to it. Generally, one end of the tube is closed off, the other end has a swivel, usually a 90º-angle swivel, attached to it. Attached to the swivel is very flexible latex tubing. At the other end of the latex tubing is a plastic mouthpiece for you to gently blow air through. The gentle air pressure keeps the glass tube from collapsing when it gets hot and soft or it can inflate the tube to make vessels and other shapes. The swivel is attached to the glass tube by either wrapping masking tape around the swiveling end until its diameter is large enough to wedge it into the glass tube and make an airtight seal or by inserting the swivel end into a rubber stopper that has a hole in its middle and it is wedged into the end of the glass tube. The 3/16" Blow Hose Assembly comes with a 3/16" diameter, 90º-angle swivel, six feet of 5/32" inside diameter latex tubing and two mouthpiec

LATEX TUBING

Used with a swivel and mouthpiece as in the Blow Hose Assembly. The 1/4" inside diameter tubing is used with a filter and mouthpiece for the Stump Sucker. The 1/4" size is also used for connecting a water pump to Bethlehem's PM2D torch. It is also used for slingshots. Hose measurements are ID, inside diameter. Wall thickness on all sizes is 3/64". Rolls are 100 feet long and can be made up from as many as four pieces.

FRIT AND POWDER TROUGH

Used to apply frit and powdered glass to hard and soft glasses. The stainless steel trough is shaped like half of a pipe that has been cut lengthwise and has legs attached to it. The frit or powder is placed in the center area. As the hot glass work piece is set onto the frit or powder and rotated, the curved sides of the trough keep the frit or powder surrounding the work piece. The frit or powder falls back on to the work piece. The frit or powder tends to not spread down the length of the trough. Your work piece gets coated faster and with less applications than when using a flat marvering plate. The small trough measures 8" long by about 2" wide. Large trough measures 12" long by about 4" wide.
